DCI Group brings proven electrical capability to Pilbara mining sites, delivering fast, compliant upgrades that keep operations running. Our self-performed teams understand active site constraints and design practical solutions that maximise existing infrastructure, reduce downtime and meet strict safety and operational standards.

The Challenge

Rio Tinto’s Laydown Yard at the 8 Mile site required improved lighting to safely maximise the operational footprint of the area. Existing lighting levels were insufficient to meet Australian Standards and Rio Tinto’s strict operational requirements. The challenge was to deliver a compliant, cost-effective upgrade without disrupting active site operations or requiring expensive new electrical infrastructure. DCI Group was engaged to investigate lighting levels, design a solution that worked within existing capacity, and install new towers that would improve safety and productivity across the expanded laydown area.

Our Solution

DCI Group began with a detailed site investigation to assess current lighting performance and identify opportunities to work within existing infrastructure. Our electrical team calculated available capacity in the Distribution Board and confirmed sufficient capacity to add new lighting without costly upgrades. We designed a solution using three 20-metre Seesaw Lighting Towers with 484W LED floodlights, selected for compliance, efficiency and durability in remote mining conditions. Working closely with Rio Tinto, we planned installation around live operations, coordinating isolations, trenching, cabling and commissioning to minimise impact on site workflows.

The Result

DCI Group delivered a fully compliant lighting upgrade within five weeks, on time and within budget. Our scope included excavation and backfill of cable trenches, installation of rag bolt cages and concrete footings, supply and installation of three 20-metre lighting towers, and safe isolation and connection to the existing network. The new LED lighting met Australian Standards and Rio Tinto’s requirements, immediately improving safety and visibility across the expanded laydown area. By maximising use of existing infrastructure, DCI Group avoided costly electrical upgrades and delivered a lean, practical solution for a critical operational asset.
