Culvert Remediation

Client

Rio Tinto

Location

Newman, WA

Project Date

July 2024

DCI Group was engaged to remediate severe scour damage near a critical culvert supporting rail operations near Newman. The team self-performed the project safely and efficiently within six days, delivering structural, concrete and rock protection works on steep terrain under live rail conditions. This project highlights our rail capabilities, rapid mobilisation and ability to execute complex remediation with zero operational disruption.

The Challenge

Heavy rainfall had caused significant scour damage behind the culvert’s western headwall, undermining the formation supporting an active rail corridor. The site was steep, remote and difficult to access, compounding the safety and logistical challenges. All remediation works needed to be performed without disrupting train operations or compromising on safety standards. DCI was tasked with responding rapidly to stabilise the structure and eliminate risk, all within strict compliance and under time-sensitive constraints.

Our Solution

DCI mobilised internal rail-certified crews and plant to site within days. We executed cement stabilisation and extensive rock pitching, with a Track Protection Officer managing live rail safety throughout. The steep terrain limited access, so excavators handled most of the scope, reducing manual labour exposure. Every phase was carefully planned for precision and risk mitigation. We self-performed the entire project using our own systems, eliminating delays associated with subcontractor coordination and improving overall delivery control.

The Result

DCI successfully completed the remediation within six days, restoring structural stability without any disruption to Rio Tinto’s rail operations. The project met all safety and quality benchmarks, with no incidents recorded. Our rapid response, detailed planning and self-performed model ensured a smooth delivery. The client praised our performance and reliability, reinforcing DCI’s role as a trusted civil partner on remote and high-risk infrastructure scopes across the Pilbara region and beyond.
